Burbo Bank Extension moves forward

Application to add up to 258MW to be examined by regulator

Dong Energy's application, submitted last month, for the up to 258MW Burbo Bank Extension has been accepted for examination by the UK Planning Inspectorate. Dong is proposing to install up to 69 turbines, to the west of the 90MW Burbo Bank development, in Liverpool Bay.

Detailed assessment of the application will now begin, after which the Planning Inspectorate will make a recommendation to the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC). If the project is approved, it is likely that fewer than 69 turbines would be installed. If 6MW Siemens turbines were chosen, just 43 would be required to reach the 258MW capacity.

It is widely thought that Dong intends to use 6MW turbines for all its upcoming UK projects, but by requesting approval for up to 69 turbines, the developer has retained the option of using 3.6MW machines.
