Scottish Enterprise has commissioned a study for the Scottish government aimed at assessing the scope for Scotland's fishing fleet to support offshore wind. It will be undertaken by SeaEnergy, supported by BVG Associates.
The study will comprise:
an assessment of developers' potential demand for vessels
an investigation into the use and conversion options for the Scottish fishing fleet
an analysis of how the demand may be met through vessels' conversion or retrofit
categorisation of the associated options and an evaluation of the potential operational support locations.
Industry stakeholders will be surveyed to gather their viewpoints as well as data. The study is in line with the Scottish Government’s policy of developing offshore wind while providing a sustainable future for Scottish fishing.
Scotland's existing offshore wind capacity amounts to under 200MW, but the development of more than 5GW is planned for the longer term. Development on such a scale would significantly boost demand for vessels in Scottish waters.
