Green light for Galloper

UK government approves 504MW project off Suffolk

The UK Government has given the go-ahead for the Galloper offshore wind farm. The 504MW project is planned for a site in the North Sea, 27km off the Suffolk coast. It is being developed by SSE and RWE.

The 140-turbine project is an extension of the existing 504MW Greater Gabbard development. To be grid-connected via onshore infrastructure at Sizewell, it is scheduled for completion in 2017.

A Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) spokesperson said Galloper would "generate major investment in Suffolk" of £18-20m (€21-23m) and create around 600 jobs across the country.

Jim Smith, SSE's managing director, renewables, said: "We very much welcome this decision which provides important reassurance about DECC's commitment to offshore wind." SSE expects to make a final investment decision in the first half of 2014.
