DONG Energy awards Atkins £2m Walney Extension contract

Substations destined for 750MW expansion project

Atkins has won a £2m (€2.3m) contract, for work on DONG Energy's Walney Extension project. The consultancy will design and support the fabrication and installation of two offshore substations, including the jackets and topsides.

They will be installed at the Irish Sea project site, off Walney Island, Cumbria. The Walney Extension will expand by 750MW, the existing 367MW Walney 1&2 development. The additional capacity should be on stream by 2016.

Dave Parkin, Atkins' head of power and renewables, said the contract award demonstrated the organisation's design capability and cemented its position as a "leading engineering and design consultancy in the offshore renewables sector".
