Green light for Neart na Gaoithe onshore work

450MW project planned off Fife coast

Mainstream Renewable Power has received planning consent for the onshore cable works for its 450MW Neart na Gaoithe offshore wind farm.

Neart na Gaoithe (Gaelic for "strength of the wind") will be sited 15.5km off the coast of Fife in south-east Scotland, in depths of up to 55 metres. It is scheduled to start generating electricity in 2017.

The onshore works include 12km of buried cable between the beach where the subsea cable is planned to reach shore and the Crystal Rig onshore wind farm, where grid connection will be made. The planning consent also covers the construction of a new substation at Crystal Rig.

"This a major landmark for Neart na Gaoithe, allowing us to work towards ensuring that the onshore connection is ready for when the wind farm starts to generate power," said Mainstream’s offshore manager Scotland, David Sweenie.
