Quebec premier Pauline Marois said: "The government believes in the future of wind energy in Quebec. This block will generate nearly C$2 billion in investment."
It will also maintain hundreds of manufacturing jobs in the province for several years, she added. The purchases will be divided into four blocks.
In a departure from the province’s practice of buying wind from independent power producers, utilitilty Hydro-Quebec will develop 200MW of the total.
Another 150MW has been set aside for projects in three indigenous Mi'kmaq communities on the Gaspé Peninsula.
Requests for proposals will be issued for 300MW of projects each in the Gaspésie and Bas-Saint-Laurent regions and 150MW of projects in the rest of Quebec.
The government said the tenders will target projects initiated by local communities or cooperatives in partnership with private developers.
No date on Quebec 800MW wind promise
CANADA: The Quebec government has announced plans to buy another 800MW of wind energy, but has failed to provide an anxious industry with a long-awaited date for when the new purchases will begin.
