Southern hemisphere's largest wind farm starts generating

AUSTRALIA: The largest wind farm in the southern hemisphere opened in Australia today. The 420MW Macarthur wind farm in the southern state of Victoria is owned by AGL Energy and Meridian Energy.

Vestas V112-3.0 MW turbines

It was the first project to sign a deal for Vestas V112 3MW turbines, which are designed for medium wind speeds.

Vestas CEO Ditlev Engel said: "Australia is now enjoying the benefits of large-scale clean energy investment and jobs, thanks to its renewable energy target.

"Bipartisan support for this policy is a crucial element in creating the long-term business certainty to make billion dollar investments like the Macarthur project a reality."

Australia's installed wind capacity stood at 2.6GW at the end of 2012, according to “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç's Windicator. This figure is set to jump by 30% in 2013 as a number of large projects are expected to come online, including the 168MW Musselroe project in Tasmania, an island state south of Victoria.
