Vestas signs 72MW deal for oil firm's Romanian wind farm

ROMANIA: Vestas yesterday announced it had signed a deal with a developer part-owned by Russian oil giant Lukoil to supply 36 V90-2.0 MW turbines to a project in Romania's Tulcea county.

The turbine manufacturer has received a firm and unconditional order for 72MW, with an option for another 12MW, for the Topolog project.

Delivery of the first 36 turbines is planned for the second half of 2013.

The Topolog wind farm is being developed by Lukerg Renew, a joint venture between ERG Renew and Lukoil, which accounts for 2.2% of the global output of crude oil. ERG Renew is Italy's largest wind energy producer, with an installed capacity of 1,232 MW throughout Europe.

The Topolog project is one of the largest wind projects in Romania, and Vestas' contract includes supply, installation and commissioning of the turbines, along with a SCADA solution.

"This project confirms that Romania has become a leading wind energy market in the region," said Vestas chief sales officer Juan Araluce.

However, the Romanian government is currently planning a 45% reduction in support for wind and other renewable energy sources. A draft law prepared by the country's energy ministry would cut the maximum price for green certificates to €30/MWh from a current €55/MWh.

"Vestas looks forward to Romanian authorities promptly clarifying the future policy framework," said Araluce. "Such a framework should allow managing short-term electricity price concerns while preserving the feasibility of investments, such as this project."

The complete Topolog wind power plant will produce more than 200GWh per year.
