Citing data from the US Energy Information Administration's (EIA), AWEA says wind turbines generated at least 10% of electricity in nine US states in 2012, up from five states the year before.
In the top two states, wind energy was responsible for more than one fifth of total electricity production, hitting 24.5% in Iowa and 23.9% in South Dakota. Nationwide, wind produced 3.5% of US electricity in 2012 compared to roughly 2.9% in 2011.
"With wind power serving as the number one source of new generating capacity in 2012, it's no surprise that wind energy is increasing its role in the overall US power mix," said Elizabeth Salerno, AWEA's director of industry data & analysis. Wind energy provided more than 5% of generation in 14 states last year.
