The project will be the UK's second-largest onshore wind farm after the 539MW Whitelee wind farm, which is in the same region.
Kilgallioch will consist of 96 3MW turbines. Developer ScottishPower did not reveal the turbine manufacturer, although it has a supply agreement in place with Alstom, which supplied 3MW Eco 100 turbines to Whitelee.
Iberdrola subsidiary ScottishPower said the installation would cost more than £400 million, with work commencing in late 2014 or early 2015. It hopes to bring the wind farm online within the next two years.
Speaking about the project, ScottishPower CEO Keith Anderson said: "ScottishPower Renewables alone now manages more than 1,200MW of wind power in the UK, having invested more than £1 billion in the last decade.
"Between 2012 and 2014 we are investing a further £1.3 billion in renewables in the UK, and projects like Kilgallioch are evidence of our commitment to major renewable energy projects."
