South Africa's third renewables round delayed

SOUTH AFRICA: The submission date in the third bidding round of South Africa's Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme (REIPP) has been delayed until 19 August, the Department of Energy (DoE) has announced.

It was originally slated for October 2012, then rescheduled to May 2013. DoE said the extra time would allow it to incorporate lessons from round one and update the request for proposals (RFP).

The team had been "inundated" with questions, the DoE said, and now needs to amalgamate the resulting amendments in the RFP. The delay would also give potential candidates sufficient time to review the revised documents.

The DoE also wants to take account of the additional 1.47GW of wind capacity announced in October.

The new RFP should be published in February. Because of the changes, registration for round three will be reopened.

So far 1196MW of wind capacity has been awarded in the first two bidding rounds.
