The project will be located in the Gharo-Jhimpir district, Thatta, according to a statement. Wikov will provide turbines while the Sindh regional government will provide funds and execute the project.
Speaking about the MoU, Sindh chief minister Qaim Ali Shah said: "Sindh is the first province to take lead in power generation through wind and it has the potential of generating 50,000MW of power through wind in the coastal belt of the province."
In January, Pakistan’s Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) announced it was targeting eight wind projects with a combined generating capacity of 550MW to reach financial close by June.
AEDB wants the eight projects in Sindh province, with a combined value of US$1.6 billion, to be generating electricity by 2013. All schemes will be offered the government’s wind speed risk guarantee, known as Wind Risk, an AEDB official told the Associated Press of Pakistan.
Earlier this year, Nordex became one of the first major manufacturers to target Pakistan. In January, the German company said it was setting up a subsidiary in Karachi, Pakistan, to facilitate its 300MW project pipeline.
Pakistan signs 50MW MoU with Wikov
