Poulsen will join Dong, the world's biggest developer of offshore wind farms, on 27 August. He replaces CFO and acting CEO Carsten Krogsgaard who in turn replaced Anders Eldrup in March.
Eldrup left Dong by mutual consent following an internal investigation. At the time, Dong chairman Fritz Schur denied Eldrup's departure was connected to a government audit of the company's accounts.
However, he did say there was an investigation over the approval of a number of employee contracts by the former CEO.
In a statement Poulsen said: "Dong Energy is a large, exciting company that holds a key position in Denmark’s transition to green energy. The company is experiencing rapid growth and still has huge potential, which I look forward to help realise.
"Another major attraction for me was the challenge that comes with the fact that Dong Energy is a company of which many people have high expectations."
