The 38,000-square-foot facility, located in the community of Beamsville in the province’s Niagara region, is expected to be producing parts within six months.
The plant will make up to 60 different types of electrical componentry for Enercon’s wind turbines and solar products.
"This factory is the first of its kind for Enercon outside of its home market of Germany," said Enercon Canada vice-president Michael Weidemann. Its establishment "stresses the importance of the Ontario wind market within our Canadian and international operations," he added.
Enercon has a factory in Quebec that produces hybrid steel and concrete towers and power converters, but the Beamsville facility is its first in Ontario.
The investment is anchored by a deal with Niagara Region Wind Corporation for 77 Enercon 3 MW turbines, but the company says the factory will also meet the increasing demand for Enercon turbines in the rest of the province, which has set local content requirements under its Green Energy Act. It will also supply the Canadian and international markets.
