Welspun targets 850MW of wind in Karnataka

INDIA: Independent Indian power producer Welspun Energy has agreed a $1 billion investment in developing up to 850MW of wind capacity in the south west state of Karnakata.

The company has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Karnataka government to develop two wind projects of 100MW and 750MW in the states of Bijapur, Chitradurga and Belgaun.

Vineet Mittal, managing director of Welspun Energy, said: "We want to help create a greener empowered India and through our renewable energy projects Welspun Energy is effecting a change on the ground. With the signing of these two projects we have moved exponentially forward in this direction."

Karnataka is one of India’s most promising wind areas, and the state government recently signed a similar agreement with turbine manufacturer Suzlon worth up to 2.5GW of wind capacity.
