Siemens in pole position for 342MW Italian offshore project

ITALY: WPD Italia has asked Italy's environment ministry for an environmental impact assessment of a 342MW wind project in the Gulf of Manfredonia, off the coast of Apulia.

The Viking project is likely to use Siemens 3.6MW turbines

WPD Italia Offshore general manager Leonardo Perini says the project would be composed of 95 Siemens 3.6MW turbines, although this could still be subject to change.

"We’re still evaluating the windiness of the site, but it’s an area where there’s a good compromise between sea depth and windiness," said Perini. The proposal foresees 2,291 full load hours a year and the sea depth on the site varies from 13-24 metres.

Perini said the project has been designed to limit visual impact, and WPD Italia is hoping the average 16 kilometre distance from the coastline will be a point in its favour. Some earlier proposed projects much closer to the shore led to stiff opposition.

The aim is also to develop a project that would have a positive economic impact on the area over the wind farm’s lifetime, Perini added.
