Envision connects 1.5MW turbine with 93-metre rotor

CHINA: Envision Energy connected a 1.5MW turbine for ultra low wind speed areas to the grid in Lai'an Wind Farm, eastern China's Anhui province this week.

The turbine is notable in that it is the world's first 1.5MW turbine with a 93-metre rotor. The previous record for a 1.5MW turbine - of 87 metres - was also held by Envision.

This marks a breakthrough of the company in tapping the ultra low wind speed areas after it put forward the world’s first 1.5MW turbine with 87-metre rotor blades in 2009.

Chinese wind farm developers are targeting eastern and southern regions with low or ultra low wind speed resources. Turbine makers have been tasked with developing wind turbines for low and ultra low wind areas.

The 93-metre wind turbine of Envision Energy is fit for areas with minimum wind speed of 5.5 metres per second, which amount to about 30% of Chinese territory in terms of wind resource.
