GE wins 460MW Ontario supply deal

CANADA: GE has been handed a 460MW supply deal by NextEra to go to six projects in Ontario.

GE's latest 1.6MW low wind speed turbine

The projects will use 288 GE 1.6MW turbines, which has been designed for low-wind locations.

The turbines will be part produced at GE's facilities at Ottawa, Windsor and Stony Creek. Under Ontario's FIT rules, 50% of all components must come from the province.

All six projects have a 20-year power purchase agreement with the Ontario Power Authority and are expected to come online in 2013.

GE launched the 1.6 turbine in May 2011. The machine combines elements of GE’s 1.5MW turbine with its 2.5-100 counterpart. At the time, the company said it has 633MW in orders for the new product.

According to GE, the 1.6-100 has a 47% increase in swept area compared to the 1.6-82.5, which gives it a 19% increase in energy production.
