Repower launches first 6M offshore

BELGIUM: Repower has installed a 6M turbine off the coast of Belgium, the first time a 6MW+ turbine has been installed offshore.

The 6M is being installed 28 kilometres off the Belgian port of Oostende. It is the first of 48 turbines to be supplied for the phase 2 Thornton Bank, with the remaining 29 turbines to be installed by the end of the year.

Phase 3, which will also use 6Ms, will be installed by mid-2013. Phase 1 uses Repower's 5M 5MW turbine, which the 6M is based on.

Repower’s 6M flagship featured the world’s largest rotor diameter at 126 metres. However, this was surpassed earlier this week when Alstom launches its 6MW Haliade turbine with a 150-metre rotor.

With the launch of the 5M in 2004, Repower was the world’s first turbine supplier to install a 5MW offshore-dedicated prototype. So far, 44 5Ms are operating offshore, and another 11 onshore.

Late last year, RWE Innogy signed a deal with Repower for two of its 6M 6.15MW turbines. The turbines will be installed on RWE's 156MW Westereems project in the province of Gronigen.
