UK launches offshore training centre

UK: A new research and development centre has been set up in the UK to focus on technologies applicable to offshore wind, as well as wave and tidal power.

The Catapult Centre, is run by a consortium of the Carbon Trust, National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec) and Ocean Energy Innovation.

It will focus on areas such as establishing a sustainable supply chain for the offshore wind sector and aims to help businesses in Britain gain market share in the supply of technologies for offshore wind.

The centre, which is expected to begin operating this summer, also hopes to advise the UK government on its renewable energy policies through pooling the knowledge of scientists, engineers and business innovators.

Andrew Mill, CEO of consortium member Narec, said: "This partnership is ideally placed to lead industrial innovation in offshore renewables. We will capitalise on the UK’s offshore engineering heritage and deployment expertise, and exploit our technology development capabilities and infrastructure."
