Suzlon fined $490,000 over environmental failings

UNITED STATES: Suzlon has been handed a $490,000 fine over a series of environmental violations at its blade manufacturing plant in Pipestone, Minnesota.

The fine follows an investigation by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), which found Suzlon had failed to uphold a number of standard including emissions standards for airborne particles

Additionally, it said the company had failed to "evaluate waste for hazardous substances, or properly manage its hazardous waste."

The MPCA also said Suzlon had buried "lead containing damaged turbine blades" in a landfill site and installed a fourth blade production line without an air emissions permit.

This is not the first time Suzlon has fallen foul of the authorities over its Pipestone plant. In 2008, it was fined $18,000 after failing to obtain an air quality permit prior to the plant’s construction.

Other wind manufacturers who have been fined by the US authorities include Vestas. In May, the Danish was fined $164,000 over health and safety violations at its tower manufacturing facility in Colorado.
