317MW Sheringham Shoal switches on first offshore turbine

UK: Electricity is now being produced from the first turbine commissioned at Statoil and Statkraft's 317MW Sheringham Shoal offshore wind farm 17km off the northern coast of Norfolk in eastern England.

Sheringham Shoal uses Siemens 3.6MW turbines

The Siemens 3.6MW turbine is the first of 86 which will be operational by the summer of 2012

Einar Stromsvag, general manager for the Statoil-Statkraft joint venture Scira, commented: "This heralds the start of operations and is an important milestone for Scira Offshore Energy." He added that electricity from the wind farm was now being traded for the first time.

Control-room services for Sheringham Shoal are now being delivered to Scira by the Statkraft hydropower plant at Rheidol in Wales.

As many as 300 vessels employing up to 50 personnel are operating on a daily basis on the Sheringham Shoal installation programme, co-ordinated from Wells-next-the-Sea, where a new operational base for the wind farm is also being built.
