Huayi said the CNY45 million was previously planned for developing 5MW turbines. On May 10, Huayi signed an agreement with Netherlands’ MECAL B.V to jointly develop 6MW offshore wind turbines.
The two parties will complete designing the 6MW offshore wind turbines before March 2013. Huayi will have exclusive ownership and use of the turbines. The prototype will be installed in September 2013.
This announcement follows Sinovel’s successful production of a 6MW prototype, last week.
Industry officials said leading Chinese wind manufacturers are shifting attention to develop 6MW turbines.
This has become a common view among Chinese wind turbine makers.
In addition to Sinovel and Huayi, other leading Chinese wind turbine makers, including Goldwind and Guodian United Power, have set out to develop 6MW.
In November 2010, Goldwind announced to make an extra CNY550 million investment in its Jiangsu branch to develop 6MW direct drive permanent magnetic wind turbines.
Industry officials said that with more companies developing 6MW and larger turbines, Chinese wind turbine manufacturers will compete more fiercely for a share of the offshore market.
Huayi, listed at Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2007, produced its first 1.5MW turbines with Aerodyn technology in 2008. It will put forward a 3MW prototype soon with Aerodyn technology.
