Timken said the ‘Wind Energy Research Centre’ will be specialise in the development of turbine bearings, seals and gearbox systems. The company claims it will be the first such project to be launched in the US.
The budget for the centre is $11.8 million, with $6 million of this coming from Timken.
It will be developed in collaboration with Stark State College, Stark County Port Authority and the Stark Development Board.
Speaking about the move, Timken's senior vice president of technology Douglas Smith said: "We'll have the resources to validate material and design properties while gleaning invaluable performance data on the mission-critical components working inside very large turbines in dynamic conditions.
"This will help us to create better designs for nature's unpredictable forces to advance the development of more reliable, cost-effective wind power generation."
