The turbine, which is has a direct drive, will be initially be trialled at Arcadis Ost 2 project off the German Baltic coast in 2014-15. Nordex is a co-owner of the project.
Nordex said around 70 N150s will be installed at the Baltic 2 site. This will give the manufacturer an advantage if it is able to establish the turbine’s reliability before the UK Round 3 contracts are available.
The N150 will be direct drive and features a tower height of 100 metres. The 150 metre rotor has a swept area of 17,671 metres2.
Speaking about the decision to use a direct drive, Thomas Karst, CEO of the Nordex Offshore division said: "Out at sea in particular, we must do everything we can to optimize the technical reliability of the turbine. With cost structures differing to those in the onshore market, we are able to implement a more complex drive system, namely a direct drive."
Nordex CEO Thomas Richterich said: "Our strategy is being driven by the development of a competitive product. For this purpose, we are acting on the trend towards third-generation wind turbines, which are characterised by a substantially greater nominal output and lower specific weights. Only in this way is it possible for a large market of sufficient relevance to emerge in the medium term."
Nordex is following in the footsteps of Vestas. The Dansish company recently launched the V164 7MW, its own 'new generation' turbine.
