Shadow flicker describes the effect produced through openings such as windows when the sun is behind rotating wind turbines. It is, in addition to noise, one of the main complaints against turbines.
The study found that there have not been extensive issues with shadow flicker in the UK and measures had been taken to resolve situations where it had been a problem.
Energy minister Charles Hendry said: "It is vital that we use the most up to date, robust and accurate scientific evidence when looking at the impact of wind farms on communities. This study will be helpful to communities, developers and planners as they assess proposals for onshore wind projects."
