MidAmerican to have 2,909MW in operation by end-2011

UNITED STATES: Warren Buffet-owned MidAmerican Energy has announced it plans to have a combined capacity of 2,909MW in wind projects by the end of the year.

In a letter to shareholders Buffet said MidAmerican would have a wind capacity of 2,909MW by the end of 2011
In a , Buffet’s investment company, it was revealed it had invested $5.4 billion in wind energy. The company said MidAmerican has the largest wind generation capacity of among US electricity utilities.

Buffet said said: "MidAmerican will have 2,909 megawatts of wind generation in operation by the end of 2011, more than any other regulated electric utility in the country.

"The total amount that MidAmerican has invested or committed to wind is a staggering $5.4 billion. We can make this sort of investment because MidAmericanretains all of its earnings, unlike other utilities that generally pay out most of what they earn."

In January, Siemens has received an order for 593MW from MidAmerican Energy. It is its largest onshore wind turbine order to date, for three projects in Iowa. The project will be completed in 2012.

In 2008, MidAmerican bought Constellation Energy for $4.7 billion. The deal brought in 8.7 million extra utility customers from coast to coast. At the time the deal brought the utility’s wind capacity to 2.5GW.
