All the bids focused on Guanacaste, the nation’s westernmost province and also the one with the best winds, said ICE head of new investment Patricia Soto.
Bidders had chosen to focus their efforts there, even though ICE had not picked any region when publishing the round’s terms.
The winner will be the project that offers the lowest cost per kilowatt, Soto added. Preliminary estimates suggest each kilowatt will cost $2,500, but final results are due on April 12, when the round closes.
Local firm MesoAmerican Energy and Enel Costa Rica, the local subsidiary of Italian utility Enel, have both submitted bids.
