GE claims the new technology will enable them to build taller wind turbine towers. The design has been developed for wind farm sites that require hub heights of 100 metres or more and is engineered to handle the static and dynamic loads.
WTS has also developed 'Hi-Jack technology', which allows the nacelle and hub to be installed on the towers without the need for large cranes.
GE plans to install a prototype to test the design, with commercial availability targeted for 2012.
GE Power& Water vice president-renewable energy Victor Abate said: "Taller towers are an essential complement to longer blades. Longer blades capture more energy and in turn improve return on investment for wind farm developers."
