The Wyoming House of Representatives has opened a hearing into a bill to triple the tax in exchange for exempting wind projects from state sales tax on the construction materials.
The bill, which is being sponsored by Republican representative Tim Stubson, calls for wind farms completed from January next year to pay the tax immediately.
The House of Representatives to the tax in February last year.
It will come into effect in 2012 for projects which have been in operation for three years. Revenue will be split 60:40 between the state and the countries where the wind farms are based.
Wyoming governor Dave Freudenthal made the bill the focus of his agenda and it was supported by two thirds of the 60-member chamber.
The state is rich in wind resource and the creation of tax prompted concerns that the move could damage Wyoming’s ability to attract wind energy investment.
