AMSC signs $10m Doosan agreement

UNITED STATES: American Superconductor Corporation of Massachusetts (AMSC) has clinched a $10 million order for wind turbine electrical components from South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Co.

The control systems will be used in both Doosan’s onshore and offshore 3MW turbines.  A 3MW Doosan turbine has operated on South Korea’s Jeju island since October 2009.

AMSC will ship the components between mid-2011 and mid-2012.  Doosan is the seventh customer to place a large order for electrical control systems or components with AMSC over the past year.

In November 2010, South Korea announced a $10.5 billion programme to develop 2.5GW of offshore wind resources.

On January 3, South Korean President Lee Myung-bak reiterated that the country, Asia’s fourth-largest economy, will strengthen its renewables sector.
