According to industry sources, the projects will be built by domestic power company Empresa Nacional de Electricidad (Ende).
Late last month, Ende said it was investigating the possibility of installing as much as 50MW in La Paz, Oruro and Potosi.
According to insiders familiar with the plan, it is believed Bolivia will build three projects, each with a 30-50MW capacity, within the three regions.
Ende has said the growth in wind capacity was necessary to strengthen the national power grid, which is failing to meet growing demand in the central South American country.
Sergio Valda, South America director for Spanish renewables consultancy 3i Ingenieria Industrial, said Bolivia has the potential to generate 100GW of wind power.
Apart from La Paz, Oruro and mining city Potosi, the province of Santa Cruz in western Bolivia will probably attract the greatest future development as it has "good flat soil conditions and low altitude with adequate air density."
In 2008, the International Finance Corporation financed a study of Bolivia’s wind capability by consultancy 3Tier. It said Bolivia’s position near the Andes means it has good wind potential.
