TVA signed a 20-year agreement with TradeWind Energy for its 111-turbine Caney River Wind Project, to be built in Elk County, Kansas. The TVA provides electricity for utility and business customers in most of Tennessee and parts of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina and Virginia.
Italian utility subsidiary Enel North America will build, own and operate the wind farm, which is expected to come online in 2012.
The contract takes TVA up to 1,581MW of contracted wind power since issuing a December 2008 request for proposals (RFP). The RFP sought 2GW of renewable power.
Earlier this year the utility signed a 300MW agreement with Iberdrola for the Streator Cayuga Ridge project in Livingston County, Illinois.
TVA has also contracted 350MW from Invenergy projects in Illinois: 200MW from the Bishop Hill Wind Energy Center in Henry County and 150MW from the White Oak Energy Center in McLean County.
The utility also has agreements for a pair of projects in the Dakotas: CPV Renewable Energy’s 200MW Ashley wind farm in North Dakota, and Invenergy’s 250MW Hurricane Lake project in South Dakota.
Another 165MW will come from CPV’s Cimarron wind farm in Gray County, Kansas. And Horizon is supplying 115MW from its Pioneer Prairie wind farm in Howard and Mitchell counties, Iowa.
