The island, which will see its first wind farm bring 82MW online later this year, plans to have 165MW of installed capacity by 2013, producing an annual 275GWh of electricity.
Ioannis Chryssis, senior energy officer at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, says that wind energy will become the most important renewable energy electricity source, ahead of photovoltaic and biomass power. "It is possible that the wind energy forecast could be increased," notes Chryssis.
"A preliminary study by the transmission system operator showed that about 300MW was the maximum the grid could support but we will see how the system behaves when the first wind farm is connected later this year."
