Siyanping Wind Farm, located upon the Siyanping Mountain, 1,663m above sea level, boasts rich wind power resources due to its geographical position.
Though wind power industry has been burgeoning in China in recent years, facilities are largely located in the north, north west, and north east of the country, and along eastern coastal lines, featuring flat plains or plateaus. Mountainous areas are currently lagging behind.
With an average temperature 17? through the year, the wind farm has an average annual wind speed of 6.75m/s at the height of 62 meters, and the wind power density averages 432.1W/m2.
The annual effective wind power generation time reaches 1,813 hours a year.
The wind farm, totaling 49.3MW, has 55 units of 850kW wind turbines made by CSIC (Chongqing) Haizhuang “uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç Equipment Company, which was set up in January 2004 in Chongqing City.
They are spaced along the mountain ridge with a gap of around one kilometer between each turbine. The whole wind farm has a floor space of 6.6km2.
The pitch-regulated variable-speed doubly-fed synchronous turbines are made with the technology from Frisia, Germany.
According to Chongqing Economic Committee, in addition to Wulong County, the area is planning another eight wind farms in six counties, totaling 450MW.
Yu Shaoqing, general manager of Chongqing Haizhuang, said his company is also set to develop 5MW offshore turbines, and expects to produce a prototype in 2011.
The company has set up an office in Canada to develop North American market.
It claims its turbines are between 20 and 30 per cent cheaper than similar turbines from foreign producers.
