The developer broke ground on Tuesday on the 30MW Kahuku Wind project, west of Kahuku town on Oahu’s North Shore.
The project, which consists of 12 2.5MW Clipper Liberty turbines, will also include a battery storage system from Xtreme Power.
First Wind has a 20-year power purchase agreement for the wind farm with Hawaiian Electric Company.
The developer secured a $117 million loan guarantee for the project from the Department of Energy.
First Wind is the developer of Hawaii’s largest existing wind farm, the 30MW Kaheawa project on Maui, which it is planning to expand by 21MW.
Hawaii has 63MW of wind installed. The state has a renewable portfolio standard requiring its utilities to derive 40% of electricity sales from renewables by 2030.
