Wind Wire: World Bank backs grid build
EGYPT: The World Bank has agreed to lend Egypt $220 million (EUR182 million) to help build new transmission lines and associated substations to bring electricity from the wind power developments on the Gulf of Suez and Gulf of El Zayat to the national grid.
The lines will be built over the next five years, ready to carry the power from up to 2.5GW of wind energy, which is expected to be operational by 2015. Egypt aims to generate 12% of its electricity from wind power by 2020, requiring installed capacity of around 7.2GW.
