Cyprus begins work on second wind farm

CYPRUS: Construction of the 31.5 MW Alexigros wind farm on Cyprus, only the second to be built on the island, has begun.

The Vensys 1.5MW turbine will be used on the project

The project is developed by Wincono Cyprus, a joint venture between local developer Ketonis and Germany's Wincono.

The first--the 82 MW Orites wind farm developed by local company DK Windsupply-- is expected to be operational later in 2010.

The Alexigros wind farm is composed of 21, 1.5 MW direct-drive turbines from German manufacturer Vensys and is located in the Larnaca district of Cyprus.

The first turbines are slated to be delivered by May 2011 while the project should be operational that summer.

With the Orites and Alexigros project together, Cyprus will have total installed wind capacity of 113.5 MW.  Cyprus is expected to have about 300-400 MW of cumulative wind capacity by 2020.
