The 50MW Barao de Sao Joao Wind Park, an investment by E.On Climate & Renewables Iberia, features an innovative system of "bird detection and monitoring" with the goal of safeguarding the biodiversity surrounding the park.
The project, located in the municipalities of Lagos and Portimao, consists of 25 wind turbines and includes the construction of around 27 km of power lines. It will have an estimated annual production of 153 GWh/year.
In view of the great environmental sensitivity of the area, the project had to take into account the autumnal route of soaring birds and the need to protect to priority bird species, such as the Bonelli's Eagle and the Queen Hawk.
The monitoring project, developed by the Strix company, foresees the tracking of migratory birds, with radar, and the stopping of the rotor blades when there is risk of collision, during the autumn migration to Africa.
Several specimens of the Bonelli's Eagle have been tagged with GPS transmitters in order to better understand the behaviour and habits of this species.
In order to reduce the risk of collision for the resident species and the negative impacts on the landscape, the project developers are promoting forestation of the area with the Quercus species of pines.
