Wind Wire: United States - Colorado mandate spurs wind activity

Colorado, which added nearly 600MW of wind power in 2007 and less than 200MW since, is gearing up for another burst of activity.

The state recently upped its green energy mandate to compel investor-owned utilities to source 30% of their power by 2020 from renewable sources after its previous 20% goal was deemed too easily reachable. In addition, Xcel Energy, the state's biggest utility, will soon begin building its next round of 650MW or more of new projects, starting in 2011 with RES America's 252MW Cedar Point project - using Vestas 1.8MW turbines made in Colorado.

The state totalled nearly 1.25GW of online wind power last year.
