WPD's win is among the first Fit contracts awarded by Ontario. Overall 48 wind farms are included among the 184 contracts handed out. The wind projects, ranging in size from 800kW to 300MW, add up to 1529MW of capacity. It comprises about 60% of the 2500MW that was issued contracts.
Hartmut Broesamle, wpd CEO, said: "With this first step, we set the course for project realisations for the years 2012 and 2013. Canada is an exiting market and we're pursuing extensive project planning goals. Now it is important that the means, which the provincial government allocated for the expansion of the grid, are being invested speedily to prevent the imminent shortage."
The purchases are a significant step in realising the "huge potential" for wind development under the province's Green Energy Act (GEA), says Robert Hornung, president of the Canadian Wind Energy Association.
