Wind wire: BC on wind map

The west coast province of British Columbia (BC) officially took its place on Canada's wind energy map on August 6, when the first of 34 Enercon 3 MW turbines that will make up the 102 MW Bear Mountain Wind Park began feeding electricity into the province's power grid.

The C$200 million project is the first foray into wind for its owner, Calgary's Altagas Income Trust, and is on track to become BC's first fully operational wind power facility. In fact, says the company, it could be commissioned ahead of its scheduled November completion date. "This is an important milestone for Altagas and for renewable power in British Columbia," says CEO David Cornhill. Altagas has a development pipeline that includes 1500 MW of wind and 400 MW of run-of-river hydro projects.
