Company profile: Under way in Italy

Falck recently inaugurated its first Italian wind farm, with 52 MW of capacity supplying electricity to the grid in Minervino Murge in the southern region of Apulia. The project, which was blessed by a local priest, actually consists of 26 Nordex 2.3 MW turbines, but because it was only initially authorised for 52 MW, it is not yet running at the full 59.8 MW capacity installed.

Falck hopes to be able to fully exploit the power from all the turbines in 2010, once permission is received from the regional authority. Meanwhile, the firm also expects to complete 42 MW of a 79.5 MW wind farm in San Sostene, Calabria, this year. The second phase, at 37.5 MW, is due for completion in 2010.

The company's 27 MW wind farm in Petralia Sottana in Sicily is also due for completion in 2010, as is the 82 MW first stage of a 138 MW project planned for Sardinia. When fully online in 2011 the Sardinia project should rank as Italy's largest wind farm.
