Offshore: Belgium fourth

Belgium's fourth offshore project has been granted a site licence by energy minister Paul Magnette.

The 288 MW Rentel wind project is a 50-50 joint venture between marine investment company Rent-A-Port and wind developer Electrawinds. The 48 turbines would be sited some 31 kilometres offshore, between Thornton Bank wind farm and the Eldepasco project, in which Electrawinds is also involved. The concession allows the developers to conduct site and environmental surveys before submitting an application for construction permits. The Eldepasco consortium is developing a 36 turbine offshore farm on the Bank zonder Naam, 37 kilometres off the Belgian coast, and has a connection contract with the country's power grid operator Elia. In addition to Electrawinds, the other partners are Depret, Aspiravi and Colruyt Group. If consented, the project could begin its infrastructure work on land in 2010, with offshore installation starting in 2011 for operation in 2012, says Eldepasco.
