Wind Wire: Presidential go

The Nigerian government has approved construction of a 10 MW wind plant in the state of Katsina, close to the border with Niger.

French turbine maker Vergnet is building the EUR20 million plant, to consist of 37 of its 275 kW turbines, over a 20-month period, starting from the contract signature date, which Vergnet says will be in the coming months.

The decision was originally announced last year following a tender call, but contract negotiations foundered in the global financial crisis. The contract is now part of a N25.3 billion (EUR121.6 million) spending program to stabilise and diversify the country's energy supply. National planning minister Shamsudeen Usman says it is the first of a series of wind power projects in Katsina.
