German/Danish wind turbine manufacturer Nordex, part of Borsig Energy, plans to move its headquarters from the small town of Rerik in Mecklenburg to the city port of Hamburg at the start of 2001. The company had no choice in view of its growing export market, explains Nordex's Thomas Tschiesche. "Over fifty percent of orders are from abroad and international customers can reach us more easily at Hamburg -- a real communications hub," he says. "Recruitment of international top people is eased and more space is available for continued growth." He adds that working conditions will also improve. Manufacturing operations at two other sites -- Give in Denmark and the Baltic port of Rostock -- are not expected to be affected. In addition, Rostock, running since start 1999, is to be expanded. The number of employees working on turbine assembly, blades and control cabinet construction is planned to be raised from 150 to 200 by the end of the year. For rotor blade production, Nordex reports that it is training 30 craftsmen every three months.
