ZOND SYSTEMS IS TO INSTALL A 6 MW DEMONSTRATION WIND FARM

Zond Systems has been selected by Central and South West Corp of Dallas to install a 6 MW demonstration wind farm made up of 12 of the company's new Z-40 turbine. The machines would be installed near Fort Davis in the far west of the state, says project manager Ward Marshall. Negotiations are still under way with Zond, based in Tehachapi, California, but a final contract should be signed by mid October, or earlier. The project is being partially funded by the US Department of Energy and the Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI). The utility and EPRI are studying the chosen site to see if wind turbines would harm resident and migratory birds. From the results of the studies they will decide whether to go ahead, to use mitigation measures, or move to another site. The current site is home to red tailed hawks, golden eagles and other raptors.
