Scotland target to be met early

As wind growth in Scotland continues to power ahead of the rest of the UK, the Scottish Executive's 18% renewables target for 2010 looks set to be met three years early. In its annual review of wind power, Scottish Renewables also says that the 40% target for 2020 could be met by 2015, given strong political will to streamline the consent processes for both grid and wind power expansion. The worst logjam is with the Scottish Executive itself, which controls the fate of large projects of 50 MW and over. Applications for 60 projects totalling 7.8 GW are being considered by the executive, representing 86% of all wind capacity now going through the Scottish permitting system. Fourteen projects have been waiting for more than two years for a decision.
