German wind turbine manufacturer Repower has helped break the Danish grip on the Australian wind power market with an order for six, 2 MW turbines to be installed near Melbourne in South Gippsland, Victoria. The customer is Repower Australia, a joint venture company set up in Sydney in 2002, which until June operated under the name Notus Energy. The 12 MW Wonthaggi wind farm project was developed by a local company Wind Power, and project financing has been clinched with an Australian pension fund, "which prefers not to be named for the time being," says Repower's Bettina Linden. "The contract is a breakthrough for Repower in the difficult Australian market which until now was firmly in Danish hands," says Jan Vollrath, general manager at Repower Australia. Reports from the Victoria state government that Repower has plans for a blade factory in Australia (“uåX˜äŠÊ˜·³Ç, May 2004) are "basically wrong," adds Linden.
