REGION BY REGION
BC: BC Hydro, Crown utility, buys clean power using competitive bidding process. Current RFP* for 5000 GWh/year of firm, clean power. Government policy requires 90% of electricity from clean or renewable resources, zero net greenhouse gas emissions from all new electricity projects; no nuclear.
Alberta: Competitive wholesale and retail markets. More than 11,000 MW in the interconnection queue.
Saskatchewan: SaskPower, Crown utility, develops wind. Buys small amount. Utility plans another 100 MW of wind by 2012 and to further study wind deployment.
Manitoba: Manitoba Hydro, Crown utility, buys wind power using competitive bidding process. Negotiations underway for 300 MW projects; RFPs for 600 MW planned for 2013-2018.
Ontario: Ontario Power Authority, agency responsible for long term electric system planning, procures electricity using competitive bidding process. Standard offer contract in place for projects up to 10 MW. Current RFP for 500 MW of renewable energy; RFPs for 1500 MW planned by 2011; 20 year plan calls for about 4700 MW by 2020.
Quebec: Hydro-Quebec, Crown utility, buys wind power using competitive bidding process. Two 250 MW RFPs targeted at municipalities and First Nations pending. Energy strategy calls for 4000 MW of wind by 2015 and 100 MW of wind for every 1000 MW of new hydro, plus research into integrating more.
New Brunswick: New Brunswick Power, Crown utility, buys wind power using competitive bidding process. Goal of 400 MW of wind by 2010.
Nova Scotia: Nova Scotia Power, investor owned utility, buys renewable energy using competitive bidding process. Legislated renewable energy mandate of 5% by 2010 and 10% by 2013. Total estimated wind generation needed to meet 2013 target is 581 MW.
Prince Edward Island: Mix of public and private wind project development for domestic consumption and export. Innovation strategy targets 500 MW by 2013.
Newfoundland and labrador: Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. Crown utility, buys wind power using competitive bidding process. Target of 80 MW of wind on Newfoundland. The utility is studying potential for large scale wind development in Labrador in conjunction with the proposed 2800 MW Lower Churchill hydro project.
Yukon Territory: Crown owned Yukon Energy owns and runs two turbines. Wind/solar/diesel power policy in discussion.
Northwest Territories: Crown owned NWT Power supplies electricity for the territory. The territorial government's greenhouse gas reduction strategy calls for installation of a wind-diesel demonstration project by 2009. This depends on federal government support, which has yet to emerge.
Nunavut Territory: Crown owned Qulliq Energy Corporation supplies electricity for the territory. Government is exploring alternatives to diesel generation.
